Here are descriptions
of a few of the farms that
were looking for apprentices
through the OEFFA Apprentice
Program during the 2004 growing
season. To view a complete
list of this year's host farms
(including contact information)
you will need to submit an
application. Once the application
has been posted to the Applicant
Index Page, you will receive
an email with instructions
on how to access the index
so that you can review both
farmer and apprentice applications.
250 Acre Certified
Organic Farm Near Columbus
A 250-acre
certified organic farm with
120 acres of woods, lakes,
ponds and streams, about 90
tillable acres, and some 35
acres in pasture located 20
miles from Columbus. We grow
a large vegetable garden, beef
cows, corn, soybeans, wheat
and hay as well as maple syrup
and logging. We are establishing
an on-farm market to sell farm
products. The primary work
of the apprentice will involve
work in the garden but additional
other work will be done depending
on abilities and interests
of the interns. Pay will be
offered. The amount will depend
on whether meals are required.
With no meals $400 per month
is available.
Small Diversified Grower Sells at
Farmers' Market and to CSA members
We have 3 acres of land
about 35 miles from Columbus,
with about one acre in row crops,
plus fruit trees, beehives, and
a berry patch. Apprentice will
be involved in all phases of
our CSA operation and we can
tailor the work to his/her interests:
greenhouse starts, field planting,
cultivating, picking and delivering,
selling at the farmers' market,
managing beehives and orchard,
writing and editing the CSA newsletter.
Cut flower arranging, flower
drying, canning and preserving
produce, drying herbs, etc. can
also be pursued. We would pay
a $300 stipend upon successful
completion of the apprenticeship
agreement involving 175 working
hours. After another 150 hours,
intern would receive another
$300 stipend. Apprentice would
be reimbursed for mileage for
any deliveries he/she makes in
his/her personal vehicle, and
would get a portion of farmers'
market earnings after the first
two times learning how to pick
and sell.
Educational Farm near Akron
We have a 130 acre property
and education center located
about 15 minutes from Akron.
About 8 acres are in vegetables
each year, and 2 acres in cover
crops. The rest is wooded or
fallow field. The apprentice
will be involved mostly in vegetable
production and all that it entails
- tractor work (mostly tillage),
planting, transplanting, fertilizing,
cultivating, occasional organic
spraying, and harvesting, and
post harvest handling. The very
easy chicken chores will be split
amongst farm staff, including
the apprentice. We have a large
number of volunteers and CSA
members working at the farm and
the apprentice will have the
opportunity to train and supervise
these workers. In exchange we
offer $240/week. This would not
include board, excepting produce
from the farm which will be available
freely.
